Dumortierite is a captivating mineral known for its striking deep blue hues, although it can also appear in shades of violet, green, or brown. This gemstone was first discovered in 1881 in Chaponost, France, and is named after the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier. Dumortierite is primarily found in metamorphic rocks and can be sourced from various locations, including Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, and the United States. With a Mohs hardness of 7 to 8.5, dumortierite is relatively durable, making it suitable for a variety of jewelry pieces. To maintain its beauty, it's best to clean dumortierite with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures. Its chemical formula is typically represented as Al₇BO₃(SiO₄)₃O₃, reflecting its complex composition and unique characteristics.
